Geology & Landforms
Some of the rocks at Yellowstone National Park are 2.7 billion years old making them the oldest rocks in North America. Yellowstone lies on top of a hotspot where magma rises from Earth's core. One of the most powerful eruptions on Earth happened at Yellowstone. There have been 3 supereruptions over the past 2.1 billion years. The last supereruption at Yellowstone happened 640,000 years ago. These violent volcanic eruptions are the things that have shaped Yellowstone's topography. Yellowstone is located on a high plateau averaging 8,000 feet in elevation and more than 10,000 hydrothermal features can be found there.
